One of my more remarkable parishioners is Alex. He a retired attorney who, somewhere along life's path, decided that making a fortune as a lawyer was not his cup of tea. So he decided to live with and take care of mentally retarded adults. He brings one or two of them to Mass each Sunday. His reverence for them equals his reverence for the Eucharist. Anyway, we visited this evening over some cake we had at the end of a meeting and he told me about his recent cancer surgery experience. He was told afterwords that his heart had stopped during surgery. He was not surprised because he had one of those experiences that can best be described by reading Romans 8:28, "We know that all things work for the good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." And now he has no fear at all. I'll still pray for Alex.
