Someone who asked me last year to be his Confirmation sponsor gave me a new invitation: going to see "The Son of Man" at the Boulder International Film Festival. This South African film is something that ought to be more available than in film festivals. It portrays Jesus as if He were born in today's Africa with all the violence, corruption, and political unrest that saturates Africa. Mary plays a large role that suits me just fine.
In this film the Black Jesus faces down Satan first in words and then in deeds. In the face of evil He says, "This is My world!" So much injustice permeates life in Africa that it could look like Satan is winning the war for who this world belongs to. Yet Jesus captures and inspires the hope of the people, and is the hope of the people, that this world does indeed belong to Him, despite all evidence to the contrary. You can buy the DVD if you wish. It is worth seeing. Whatever evils you face in your life, you will remember Jesus saying to the devil, and to us as well: "This is My World!" Evil does not have the last word.
